After perusing the LO help, I discovered what was playing havoc with my
styles.
In Tools > Options, I simply needed to deselect "Apply Styles".
Et voilà. Now everything works as I'd expected it to. Thank God!

In a template I call "Memoranda_Dbl", I have a style named "Text Body".
Property Settings:
Organizer: Name=Text Body; Next Style = Text Body; Linked with = Default

IIRC MySql is owned by Oracle, but *MariaDB is not*, so I believe there
