For now, I'll just say that Writer is not a word processor so much as an
intermediate desktop publishing program. You can actually substitute it very
successfully for proprietary tools like FrameMaker.

Any on-the-fly justification is going to be rough. Do you run Tools > Language

improve any alignment, even ragged right.

ou'll find that including small caps and old style numbering
are rare enough that, when a typeface does include them, they are major
selling points.

Does anyone have a complete list of these codes? I haven't been able to find
one after a search in obvious places such as
bout watermarks and sideheads, but if you can
suggest a use that I haven't heard about, I'll credit you when the book is

typography, styles and templates didn't stop being essential because a lot of

This might not be such a good idea. In MS Word, changing the template used to
be a major source of corruption and formatting problems. For all I know, it
still is.

2. Could the anchor position have an effect?
3. What if the picture was placed inside a frame, and the frame size and
position protected?
I'm going to see what results I get in answering these questions. I'll pos
t to know them, although
organized differently from FrameMaker's.
But the anchored graphics -- there, I miss FrameMaker something fierce. I don't
know what's so hard about the concept that an anchor is supposed to keep a
graphic where you put it.

At 90,000
words, reformatting a book separately several times can be prohibitively time-
consuming.
That's time that might be better spent on correcting typos and revisions on
fewer formats.

However, it is all very unclear, which is the main reason it is not
officially recognized as a bug (or, perhaps, a series of bugs).

The Marginalia frame style might help you. It will require some setup to get
