As a viewer gv's not too bad (or too good, really), but the print option presents an lpr command, which I don't know how to express as a command to print to a pdf. The problem with the print option in the document viewer (evince) is that it doesn't work to print to a file. It complains that "Printing is not supported on this printer." I haven't looked at all the other suggested options yet, but thanks to all who've posted so far.
