For "compatibility" with something that does not want to be "compatible" at all, you may consider SoftMaker office for Linux. The current version is inexpensive. Its predecessor is free as in "free beer". Of course, it can not be API compatible to any other product. I agree that LO is on a slippery road as far as quality managment is concerned.
