My OS is Debian Stretch.  My version of LibreOffice is 1:5.2.7-1+deb9u4 from the stretch-backports depository. The installed version of hunspell GB has the same as the version number as LO. The US version is 20070829-7.

I can open the Spelling window with F7. At the top of the window is a place to indicate text language, which when the window opens says <none>.  The two options are English (UK) or English (USA).  Preceding each option is a blue check mark with in a small font the letters ABC. When I click on one or other of these options nothing happens; the selection box still says <none>.  So I cannot check spelling, or have hyphenated words.

Comments/suggestions anybody?

<Right Click> on text.
<Left Click> on "Styles"
<Left Click> on "Edit Style"
On "Font" tab.
Check what is next to "Language" at bottom.
If blank, change to preferred language.

This was the only way I could get spell check to work.

Hope this helps.
